SIMEF provides integral maintenance and railway engineering services in two series of locomotives - LE5600 and LE4700, operating in Portugal, owned by CP - Comboios de Portugal, E.P.E. and Medway, S.A.
More about us
SIMEF seeks daily to ensure the Excellence of its maintenance activity by developing its organizational infrastructure and human capital, optimizing its value chain and by this way ensuring the satisfaction of its Clients.
Our Vision, Mission and Values
SIMEF started operating on 1 May 2011, and currently has approximately 70 employees, some of them coming from the EMEF, S.A. Group, under the leadership of the Managing Director and with the support of 4 Coordinators. The ACE's head office is located in Entroncamento, and the maintenance teams are geographically divided between two Material Parks and Workshops, one in Entroncamento and the other in Santa Apolónia.
Structure and Team
SIMEF provides integral maintenance and railway engineering services in two series of locomotives (LE5600 and LE4700) operating in Portugal, owned by CP - Comboios de Portugal E.P.E. and Medway, S.A.
This series is composed by 29 locomotives distributed between freight and passenger services. 19 are assigned to the long distance passenger service, owned by CP, E.P.E. and the remaining 9 Units are assigned to the freight service.
These are electric traction locomotives, with a power supply voltage of 25 kV and 50 H, circulating on the Iberian gauge in Portuguese territory.
These units entered into service in a phased way between 1993 and 1995.
The maximum speed is 220 km/h, with a nominal power of 5.6 MW, and a maximum traction effort at start-up of 300 kN.
The traction converters are based on GTO technology and each wheel set is driven by an asynchronous three-phase motor with a continuous power of 1400 kW.

This series is composed by 25 Siemens ES46B1-A type locomotives, numbered from 4701 to 4725, with 22 units built in Portugal, in partnership with EMEF S.A.
These locomotives have 25kV/50Hz electric traction and, although they are prepared for passenger trains, their initial purpose is the transportation of goods.
The wheelsets, currently with Iberian gauge (1668mm), have a configuration in Bo'Bo', and can be changed for circulation on European gauge (1435mm) tracks.
The maximum speed is 140 km/h and the rated power is 4684 kW, with a maximum traction effort at start of 300 kN.
These locomotives incorporate new technologies, which increase energy eficiency, enabling a reduction in operating costs.

SIMEF is located at the Entroncamento PMO, an operational complex located at Rua D. Afonso Henriques, 2330-519 Entroncamento.
This space, which totals approximately 2500m2 of covered area, is equipped with specific resources to carry out all maintenance, preventive and corrective maintenance activities on the 54 electric locomotives 5600 and 4700.
Light maintenance activity on LE5600 locomotives in the Long Distance service is carried out at the Lisbon-Santa Apolónia Oficinal complex, and SIMEF occupies a total area of approximately 1100m2.

Since 2021, Maintenance Technicians have been using the CMMS system in the mobile version. This process allows a high optimization of time and resources in the operation, since the data is entered directly into the system and in real time during the locomotives' maintenance interventions.
Telemaintenance - Remote Monitoring of Locomotives.
This predictive maintenance system allows remote access to locomotive data in real time, thus bringing benefits to all parties involved.
This innovation in practice makes it possible to avoid long delays in circulation or immobilisations with a clear added value for Customers.
The braking system test equipment with automatic test procedure, used in both of the workshops, is parameterized according to the acceptance criteria defined by the Manufacturer, ensuring total independence from the human factor when testing the vehicle's safety system.
From our positions on Social and Environmental Responsibility, to our Prevention of Accidents at Work policy and our Certifications, find out how we are moving towards sustainability.
SIMEF is concerned with ensuring the most efficient sustainability and innovation policies, always seeking the improvement and concern for the balance of all its stakeholders.
